The importance of an Arboricultural Consultant
An arboricultural consultant plays a critical role in the management, assessment, and preservation of trees within a wide range of environments, including residential properties, development sites, public spaces, and infrastructure projects. Their work ensures that trees are considered responsibly and sustainably throughout planning and development processes, and that their health, safety, and value to the environment are maintained.
At the core of their role is the ability to assess tree health and structural integrity. Through detailed surveys, often conducted in accordance with British Standards such as BS5837:2012 (Trees in relation to design, demolition and construction), consultants evaluate trees for their condition, life expectancy, and potential risks to people and property. These assessments inform decisions about which trees can be retained, which require maintenance, and which may need removal due to safety concerns or poor condition.
Do I need one?
Crucially, arboricultural consultants act as a bridge between developers, local planning authorities, landscape architects, engineers, and the general public, offering practical solutions that align with ecological best practices. Their input helps protect the urban tree canopy, enhance biodiversity, and support sustainable land management.
